MIPS Technologies' 64-Bit Processor Core Powers Infineon's New Broadband Processor Family

Infineon's EasyPort(TM) Communications Processor Designed Around a MIPS-Based(TM) 64-bit Processor Core Subsystem To Give Customers a Powerful Platform for Broadband Systems

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 3, 2002-- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:MIPS - News; Nasdaq:MIPSB - News), a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, announced that Infineon Technologies' new EasyPort(TM) broadband communications processor family, launched today, is based on a powerful, highly integrated, 64-bit CPU core subsystem that utilizes the MIPS64(TM) 5Kc(TM) processor core to give Infineon's customers extensive packet and ATM cell processing functionality.

EasyPort ICs, which are the industry's first network terminal controllers based on a MIPS® 64-bit processor core, address market demands for compute power and flexibility in data and voice/data integrated access device (IAD) systems for small- and medium-size enterprise gateways, access routers and voice over IP (VoIP) routers. System manufacturers using EasyPort in combination with Infineon's advanced broadband access and voice/data chipsets can deliver powerful platforms with fast Internet access, integrated high-speed media streaming and multi-channel voice services through a single uplink.

"Infineon made a strategic decision to use a 64-bit core instead of a 32-bit device because of the need to enable sophisticated applications in service provider platforms, such as firewalls and virtual private networks (VPNs), and future applications such as home private networking," said Christian Wolff, vice president of Infineon's Communications Group and general manager of the Access Business Unit. "With the MIPS64 architecture, our customers are ready for 64-bit networking protocols and the full 128-bit IP addressing defined in IPv6, the next-generation Internet protocol."

"The MIPS architecture is the performance standard for communications processors and MIPS Technologies' leadership position in 64-bit solutions extends that standard. By integrating the 5Kc core into its leading-edge family of broadband processors, Infineon gives its customers the benefits of an industry standard processor architecture combined with 64-bit performance and with the support of a broad suite of development tools and faster time to market," said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing at MIPS Technologies.
